KurzweilAI.net--zero gravity
While we are exploring space activity and zero gravity, I thought I would present this article tomorrow. Professor Kurzweil is quite a fascinating person. In fact, I attended one of his lectures that he conducted at the University of Houston a year ago. Seaya...

I am a life-long German language learner (and lover) and I know that some of my global English students like German as well and are, in fact, learning it as well as English. In any event, I thought some of you might find this site both helpful and amusing....check it out...

CERN: Damage to new collider forces 2-month halt - Yahoo! News
I am sorry for the world's loss and for the Swiss who are hosting this scientific endeavor...wish the super collider could have been in Texas--or at least one of then--as was initially planned and initiated until it lost funding in the early nineties...Not to worry, though--the Swiss et al will have it up and running again as a global marvel and perhaps added to new wonders of the world...seaya...I am on a white wing dove hunting trip in South Texas to escape Htown and the never ending aftermath of Hurricane Ike--and our home which is still off the grid--without power...

Hi Globalers...hope this finds you faring well on our 6th day of the aftermath following Bad Boy Ike. I know you must be looking forward to some semblance of normalcy, and believe me, I do as well. I sincerely pray you and your family are doing well and I look forward to seeing you and being with you in our English classroom, Monday morning...Shakespeare's play--All's well that ends well--comes to my mind, and I do hope I find that your situation has ended well. If you would like, we will begin class by sharing our Ike stories...If you are tired of it all--as I currently am--in fact, I am exhausted from it all yet glad I am not in a shelter as so many unfortunate people are, we will simply have business as usual--i.e., our typical English class...Take care and seaya

James Taylor - Fire and Rain
This is apropos for Hurricane Ike--in my view...here in Htown as I drink my red-eye coffee at Starbucks this gorgeous California borrowed weather morning. We are powered up here...I am sitting with complete strangers yet I feel so connected to them and so alive...We are all living here right now and we are happy for now...seaya

As James Taylor sang and still sings, I've seen fire and I've seen rain, and I heard an official on the radio this a.m. who said that, yes, we talk about wars and human acts of violence, but never have I seen such natural devastation as I have seen committed by Hurricane Ike, and I thought I would just link these words with this slide show below--just wish I had James Taylor's music piped in...I'll work on that...seaya

Ike Aftermath Update for Rice University Language Program...
I hope all of you received my email or have been able to access the Rice University website. I regret that we will not have classes until next Monday, September 22 due to the devastation around Houston and the coastal areas of Hurricane Ike. We are all sad about the situation and we pray you are well and out of harms way. Take care and I look forward to seeing all of you again and a return to some sort of normalcy for all...seaya http://www.rice.edu

Not in Galveston--this was taken in Coronado, California!
The Numbers Guy - WSJ.com
Well, this is disguised as an article about the most frequently used words in the English language. The writer is so right about the word yes--everyone says absolutely now for the affirmative--and, quite frankly, I am tired of hearing it--and, yes, I am tired of catching myself saying it automatically (see Noam Chomsky for the theoretical reason) ---and I don't even like the smug elitist body language one portrays when he or she responds to some interview or even to a regular real-time question with, "Oh, absolutely!" It's as if he or she is all knowing and so optimistic and certain about life--which is at the moment and in many cases--totally unpredictable! Oh well, I guess I have cabin fever already due to Ike--whom I absolutely don't like! LOL. Where is your sense of humor everyone? Okay, I guess I will continue to ride out Ike (no, I am absolutely not in Galveston; however, I am only about 50 miles from there and yet I live in an area where the residence have been ordered to stay home and off the freeways and other roads to make room for the people who are in immediate harms way not to mention the seek and rescue heroes who will be put in harms way to try to save the thrill/kill seekers who absolutely refuse to follow orders that may otherwise ultimately save them and the rescue people. Ike is huge and he is dangerous...What me worry? (see Mad for the source...hehehe)

Now Ike...what's up with 3 storms in a row?
We--Rice University--will be closed tomorrow due to Hurricane Ike...this is a good time to practice using modals by speculating...e.g. The storm could/might/may--and even probably will cause flooding and loss of life and property pending on the magnitude and force of the winds and rain...Also, as I have said before--be smart--If you must drive in Htown--this flat, hugely spread out cement city--don't drown, turn around. seaya Monday! (maybe...)

Global English goes tubing down the Frio River in Concan, Texas
If you want to have a good time--either white wing dove hunting--or tubing/floating down the Frio River, then I recommend that you drive to Concan, Texas some day soon! Here is my Lab, Ali (the blond one) and her friend, Moe. This is a great way to experience Texas culture-- yet far away from the maddening crowds of the city and the hectic freeways...Ask me about my weekend tomorrow in class!
