My Global Friends: Here is a poem written by one of my Korean students--Juby~~aka bon Juby. It is a lovely expression of his feelings and thoughts about the English word now...

At This Moment...

If I can look at the stars at this moment,
How wonderful that is!

Even though my ears will become some
soil before long, and if I can listen to The
9th Symphony at this moment, how
brilliant that is!

Even though my friends will be erased
from my memory, and if I can smile and
talk with them at this moment, how joyful
that is !

Even though my brain stops, and even
though the moment when my hands decay
comes, it is true that I am writing my
poem at this moment and about whatever I want.

It is really true that nobody can ban this moment ....NOW.

McCain starts mapping out a new role in the Senate - Yahoo! News

With all due respect to Senator John McCain, I would like to place his eloquent, honorable and dignified concession speech on my blog as I did for Senator Barack Obama's acceptance speech. Perhaps you could learn something from both speeches in a way that might help you reach an understanding of the differences between the two presidential hopefuls. In any event, you might want to compare and contrast the two political speeches for an American government class or for our academic preparation class at Rice University. Please feel free to react and respond--and I will seaya tomorrow for another dose of The Daily English Class. You are an awesome class--and as I have told other students in the past, I have come to believe over the years that you are--diplomats in our own backyard...

The Numbers Guy - WSJ.com

Well, this is disguised as an article about the most frequently used words in the English language. The writer is so right about the word yes--everyone says absolutely now for the affirmative--and, quite frankly, I am tired of hearing it--and, yes, I am tired of catching myself saying it automatically (see Noam Chomsky for the theoretical reason) ---and I don't even like the smug elitist body language one portrays when he or she responds to some interview or even to a regular real-time question with, "Oh, absolutely!" It's as if he or she is all knowing and so optimistic and certain about life--which is at the moment and in many cases--totally unpredictable! Oh well, I guess I have cabin fever already due to Ike--whom I absolutely don't like! LOL. Where is your sense of humor everyone? Okay, I guess I will continue to ride out Ike (no, I am absolutely not in Galveston; however, I am only about 50 miles from there and yet I live in an area where the residence have been ordered to stay home and off the freeways and other roads to make room for the people who are in immediate harms way not to mention the seek and rescue heroes who will be put in harms way to try to save the thrill/kill seekers who absolutely refuse to follow orders that may otherwise ultimately save them and the rescue people. Ike is huge and he is dangerous...What me worry? (see Mad for the source...hehehe)

LPGA to require English for intl players - Golf - Yahoo! Sports

Being an English instructor, I think this is a good idea. However, I am not sure everyone would agree due to the choice factor. Clearly, it seems that professionals in any field would want and chose to improve his or her own global communication skills, yet I believe desire (free-will), sustained effort, and, in this case, linguistic intelligence, are also factors in learning a language. Isn't it presumptive and somewhat arrogant to arbitrarily declare an English only policy? On the other hand, I suppose one could argue that the choice is still there for the LPGA players, yet not in speaking English--only in the choice to go professional or not. What do you think globalers?

Words...just words...

While walking this afternoon in the stagnant Texas heat, I heard a bird sing out with the remarkably similar cadence of Senator Obama's Words just Words speech. No, I am not just kidding, as I often say to you in the classroom as a means to help encourage a little laughter and a more relaxed casual atmosphere. Remember when I told you that each language has its own special rhythm and melody? Remember also that I have often claimed that once language learners have mastered the verbal construction and vocabulary in the English language, or any language for that matter, language acquisition often occurs. Back to the bird: Once language acquisition has occurred, each individual may then manipulate the rhythm to his or her own liking which varies around the country--east west north south accordingly. Well, I have come to the conclusion today that Obama's Words just Words speech is a clear example of what I am amused with at the moment, and how this particular bird brought this Ohrwurm (ear worm) to play over and over in my my mind. In fact, I find myself repeating words just words over and over again in a variety of settings and as a response to a variety of spoken contexts. Now, back to the bird again: This particular bird's song sounded like this: Dahhht DOT Dahhht. Now I am really not sure what kind of bird it was nor is it really relative to my current line of thinking. Seriously, though, is there a song working here? After all, the song bird appears to know the rhythm to Words just Words. How amazing is that? Perhaps a Saturday Night Live skit is a work in progress as I muse forward. That might be clever, but in all seriousness, and lest I digress into hilarious oblivion, it is important to note that English is a direct language, which when spoken eloquently and with the speaker's sincere intention to influence the degree of listener understanding, it is so much more than words just words. . In fact, listener understanding in English is based on specific contexts. So the words just words mean something--so they (the words)should not be denied as just words. On the contrary--listener beware: Listen and observe! Understand! That's it. Oh, alas, I still can't seem to get Obama's words just words out of my mind....I wonder if that bird is going to be out tomorrow when I walk...With all due respect to the senator and presumptive presidential candidate for the DNC, I may be called, then, to name my song bird, Obama.

Global English returns from U.S. Naval Nuclear Submarine Base New London, Groton Connecticut

Hi Gloablers! I am back from New England where I visited one of my past homes in New Port, Rhode Island. It was truly cool being a Yankee again, and, admittedly, the most interesting aspect of my trip was staying on my brother's yacht--The Zep Tepi--at the nuclear submarine base in New London, Connecticut. The experience was awesome because I felt I had returned to my military/overseas brat (sorry Dad, I mean my Navy Junior) roots. Now hear this: Every morning (0800 hours) I awoke to the Star Spangled Banner, and at sunset I stood on deck in silence to Retreat. How cool is that? Well, to me, it is ueber cool. I think the people who are a part of Operation Star Spangled Banner, and most of all, my father, the late honorable U.S. Navy Captain John Chelsea Allman, would be proud that we--the crew on my brother's boat--would drop everything, and spring--asap--to the deck and stand at attention with right hands over our hearts to both of these beautiful American military practices. I salute both my father and my brother for serving our country. Amusingly, by being on this magnificent naval submarine base, I felt I had returned home again from all of my uprooted past to where I truly belonged...proudly in the presence of the greatest and most powerful American source--the U.S. military. Anyway, before I am accused of bird walking too much, let me end by telling you that I did love seeing the lovely black nuclear submarines. They remind me of a pod of black whales as they surface so mysteriously and unexpectedly yet so silently and powerfully. Well, bye for now and whoever, wherever, and however you are out there in cyberspace--never forget that we are well protected by these surprisingly silent moving global creatures...Sweet! Okay, now next month I will return to my west coast roots in sunny, Coronado, California. Yes, I am also a California girl--so I'm a westie and eastie...OAO, GE

And now, when I don't know an answer to a question, or if I want to encourage the element of surprise in conversation with my students, friends and family members, or a sense of wonder, I'll simply answer: I don't know. It's a mystery. This response always seems to trigger a slight smile, and often even a little friendly slanting of the eyes, or better yet an unsolicited wink...I am in love with so many films--particularly when they provide me with rich discourse and new ways of thinking and feeling about life...I suppose life, then, in my view, is a film and if a film is good, then, alas, life is good. Tja, Leben ist gut.

ICT Results - Emotional robots in the spotlight

Our future companions? Here come Wall-E and I-Robot!! I do like the implications for autism and other social and language communicative disorders...fascinating! The researchers hope that robots will be accepted into the human community. Do you think there is a place in your world for robots? I, personally, am open to the possibilities if in deed robots can help us achieve understanding and tolerance in a way that is globally friendly and peaceful. I would like to read your world views. Please respond.

Sarah recommends this video--I do as well.

Perhaps, students who are majoring in English would find this lecture and book ,River Town, fascinating. I look forward to reading the book.

Odd Disappearance of Afghanistan's Only Female Olympian | 2008 Olympics, Afghanistan, Mehbooba Andyar | CitizenSugar - News and Politics

I hope with all of my heart that Mehbooba Andyar is safe and that she makes it to the Olympics and that she is granted asylum in Europe, if that is her desire. Go Mehbooba!

Odd Disappearance of Afghanistan's Only Female Olympian | 2008 Olympics, Afghanistan, Mehbooba Andyar | CitizenSugar - News and Politics

Two Trivial Questions...

Know your current events: In which covert mission does the following message appear:
Fifteen pax. All airborne. All good to go.
Also, in which country did this recent covert op occur?

Know your US logos:
Whenever, Wherever, However.
To which US organization does this logo belong?

That's it. I am done for today.

Anything you can do, I can do better

Well, this one might be more fun to sing. It's illustrated like Sarah's "Stick News" on her Daily English Show."

Jack can do anything better than you

okay--we will open our daily English class on Monday--with this fun song--I can do anything better than you! Yes I can!

Stop! Use the English language now at this moment where ever you are! !

Globalers, it is true that grammar attacks, reading, listening, and writing are important skills in terms of acquiring a language, but I am perfectly convinced that we must force ourselves to use our target language 24/7...yes, think, feel and speak the language--even if you have to talk out loud to yourself!! So, today, I encourage all of my English students (I prefer to say English students instead of students of English) who are all over this great planet called earth, to get with it and speak, speak, and speak some more until you fall into bed tonight with visions of English only captions all around you and in your sweet English dreams. What say you? Oh, you say, "Sure, that's easy for you to say because you are a natural (I like to say "natural" better than "native") English speaker." Okay, well, how is this: I will make the same pledge to speak and think only in German (my target language). So...auf Wiedersehen! Bis Montag--and be ready for a wild morning of English speaking because you are going to speak with powerful intentions to improve your pronunciation in and understanding of English in a way that is fun and friendly--but of course! However, let me warn you, it's going to be an American English only crazy day! Now, start speaking...

Modal Verbs in English

This teacher has a calm, cool, and, presumably, collective teaching style--so let's warm up with his brief little lesson on modals this morning. Before we start, however, I just wanted to say that I love the modal--might! I might go to Germany next year. Also, I adore, may. May I ask a question, please? Then, too, would is genuinely polite. Would you please tell me the time?

Do you have a favorite modal?

I often dream that I am flying--so I think we will all fly like this man one day. However, I would prefer to take off up right with a power pack on my back, and with, perhaps, some sort of bubble or cocoon like plastic to cover the body in order to protect the person from the elements. What say you, globalers?
